100 YEARS OF SCHEDULES COMMERCIAL AVIATION:  1976 CONCORDE FLEW FOR THE FIRST TIME ON SCHEDULED SERVICE

This week we continue on the time line to 1976 when the Concorde flew for the first time on scheduled service.

I.embedThe Concorde is truly an amazing aircraft. It is the only aircraft that once operated supersonic passenger flights.

For the first time in the history of human evolution, we have gone back in time. We once were able to cross the Atlantic in 3 hours. Now it will take us twice as long. True - the Concorde was very expensive for British Airways and Air France to maintain, but Concorde was considerably profitable.

Concorde was an old aircraft - it was built at the end of the 1960s and began commercial service IN 1972.  IT flew its first scheduled service from London to Bahrain and then Paris to Rio de Janeiro. It was covered in white reflective paint due to the heat build up caused by its high speeds.  However the Concorde would have been able to fly until 2009, or, with a few modifications, even longer.
September 11 was one of the main causes of Concorde's retirement. So was the Concorde crash which killed all of the passengers. But still, Concorde is a very safe aircraft. And, even though it cost over $30,000 to fly on, over 2.5 million people flew on Concorde in its total commercial air service life.
